Window graphics solve three different problems: privacy, advertising, and branding. The right material depends on which problem you're solving. Here's a practical comparison based on the window installations we do for offices, retail, and commercial spaces.
Best for: Conference rooms, office partitions, medical offices, any space where you need privacy without blocking natural light.
How it works: A translucent adhesive film applied to glass that mimics the look of etched or sandblasted glass. Available in full frost (complete privacy), gradient frost (privacy at eye level, clear above and below), or custom patterns with brand logos cut into the frost.
What we've installed: Pandora Marketing's conference room — full frosted film with their logo reversed out in clear vinyl, creating a branded privacy wall that still lets natural light fill the room. The result looks like custom architectural glass at a fraction of the cost.
Lifespan: 7-10 years indoors. Removal is clean with no adhesive residue.
Cost range: $8 – $15 per square foot installed, depending on complexity and custom cutting.
Limitations: Frosted film doesn't work for advertising because it's not printable with photographic imagery. It's a privacy and branding solution, not a marketing surface.
Best for: Storefronts, retail windows, any space where you want full-color graphics visible from outside while maintaining visibility from inside.
How it works: Vinyl printed with your graphics on one side, with thousands of tiny perforations (holes) that allow people inside to see out. From outside, the solid printed areas dominate and the holes disappear — your storefront looks like a full graphic wall. From inside, you can still see the street, the parking lot, and approaching customers.
What we've installed: Skechers' headquarters window display — a full-color branded panel with their logo across multiple window panes. From the street, it's a bold brand statement. From inside, employees still have natural light and outward visibility.
Lifespan: 3-5 years outdoors (UV laminated). Can be removed and replaced seasonally for promotions.
Cost range: $12 – $25 per square foot installed, depending on panel size and print complexity.
Limitations: Perforated vinyl reduces light transmission by about 50% because the vinyl portions block light. Night visibility (looking out from a lit interior) is reduced. Not ideal for spaces that need maximum natural light.
Best for: Campaign launches, seasonal promotions, retail activations, any space where maximum visual impact outweighs the need for visibility through the glass.
How it works: Standard printed vinyl (not perforated) applied to the full window surface. Blocks all visibility and light through the covered area, but provides the highest print quality and most vivid colors.
What we've installed: Oakley's Prizm retail campaign at a curved storefront — full photographic panels featuring athletes and product shots wrapped around the building's curved glass facade. The impact is dramatic because there's no perforation pattern diluting the image quality.
Lifespan: 3-5 years outdoors with UV laminate. Often used for 1-12 month campaigns and then replaced.
Cost range: $10 – $20 per square foot installed.
Limitations: Blocks all light and visibility. Interior spaces behind full wraps will be dark. Not suitable for offices, restaurants, or any space where people need to see out.
