When you get a vehicle wrap quote, the single biggest quality variable isn't the printer or the designer — it's the vinyl. Cast and calendered vinyl look identical on day one. The difference shows up 12-18 months later when the cheaper option starts cracking on curves, lifting at edges, and fading in the sun. Here's what you need to know.
Cast vinyl is made by pouring liquid PVC into a thin film and allowing it to cure slowly. This produces a thin (2 mil), flexible material with no internal stress. It conforms naturally to curves, rivets, corrugations, and recessed areas without shrinking back.
Calendered vinyl is made by squeezing PVC between rollers under pressure, like pasta through a machine. This is faster and cheaper, but the rolling process creates internal stress in the film. Over time, that stress causes the vinyl to shrink, crack on curved surfaces, and lift at edges — especially in heat.

Calendered vinyl works fine for flat surfaces with short lifespans: temporary banners, flat-panel signage, indoor wall graphics, and promotional decals you'll replace within a year. If the surface is flat and the graphic is temporary, there's no reason to pay for cast.
